Qualifications

  • Required: Bachelor's degree and the ability to become certified by the State of Missouri to teach Adult Education & Literacy. Fingerprinting through MACHS required for certification. Must attend the Pre-Certification Workshop and Beginning Teacher's Assistance Program within three months of hire date.
  • Department of Corrections Requirements: Must have a two-step TB test with negative results followed by annual TB tests during birth month, a pre-employment drug screening, and the ability to clear a MULES and NCIC background check.
  • FLSA: Exempt
  • Salary Schedule: Per approved Adult Ed Salary Schedule
  • Direct Report: Supervisor of Adult Education
  • Terms of Employment: Part-time, 12 months

Purpose: This position will be responsible for teaching the HiSET curriculum to offenders located inside the men's Western Reception Diagnostic Correctional Center in St. Joseph. The purpose of the program is to prepare students to obtain a high school equivalency certificate while incarcerated.

Essential Job Functions

  • Attend at least 20 hours of approved professional development training per fiscal year;
  • Attend local and state professional development workshops;
  • Attend DOC training;
  • Become certified to administer TABE pretests and post-tests;
  • Maintain daily hours worked in the Frontline Education Time and Attendance system;
  • Assist in selection and development of instructional materials;
  • Develop and provide individualized program of learning for each student;
  • Provide group instruction utilizing instructional activities that are evidence-based and shown by practice and research to be effective instructional practices;
  • Use student goals and needs, in combination with assessment results, to guide instruction;
  • Provide for and supervise maintenance of student folders;
  • Direct, guide, and evaluate student progress;
  • Adhere to all Department of Corrections policies and procedures;
  • Assist with annual High School Equivalency graduation ceremony preparations
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of the AEL Program
